RhinoMarine Network Licensing
Copyright Alion Science and Technology
With a network license, anyone on the network can use the software, as
long as the number of users does not exceed the number of licenses that you
have purchased. For example, if you have purchased a single user network
license, and it is currently in use by someone else, when you try to run
RhinoMarine you will be notified that the license is in use, and that you
will have to try again later.
Installation of a Network License
The installation of the Network License consists of two steps;
installing and licensing RhinoMarine with the Network License on the
License Server computer, and installing and licensing RhinoMarine on each of
the other computers in the network that will be using RhinoMarine (client
computers).
1. Installation on the License Server
One computer must be selected as the license server. This does
not necessarily have to be the "file server" in your network; it can
be any computer, but it should be one that is always available to
other users in the network (i.e. not a laptop that is sometimes
removed from the network).
On the License Server:
- Install Rhino and RhinoMarine
- When you start Rhino, select License from the
RhinoMarine menu. You will see the RhinoMarine Licensing
dialog, showing that you have a 15-day trial license:

-
Using the Site Code, purchase a Network License
with one or more users from Proteus Engineering or your local
reseller. You will receive a Site Key, which you should use to
activate your license. The yellow "Limited" icon should now be a
green "Active" icon, together with a message stating that you
have a Network License. Click on Continue.
-
IMPORTANT: Any computer that
will be using the Network License must have full control
privileges in the directory on the License Server computer
where RhinoMarine is installed (usually c:\program
files\Proteus Engineering\RhinoMarine4).

2. Installing on a Client Computer
Each computer that will be using RhinoMarine with
the Network License must go through the licensing process. This
one-time process is as follows:
-
Install Rhino and RhinoMarine on the Client
computer.
-
When you start Rhino, if the Licensing dialog
does not appear, click on License in RhinoMarine
menu. You will see the Licensing dialog, showing the status of
your license.
-
If this is the first installation of RhinoMarine
on this computer, you should have a 15-day Evaluation license.

-
Click on the browse button ( ... ) to locate the
file rm4.exe on the Network License server computer. This
is normally in the directory c:\program files\Proteus
Engineering\RhinoMarine4 on the computer that is the Network
License server (do not use the rm4.exe that resides on the
Client computer). Once you have located the file, click on Get
License.
-
You will be returned to the RhinoMarine
Licensing dialog, and the icon will now be green, showing that
you have successfully licensed this copy of RhinoMarine using
the Network license.
When you execute any RhinoMarine command, it checks
to verify that you have a valid license, which could be a trial
license, a standalone license, or a network license. If your copy of
RhinoMarine has a network license, it must verify that there is a
license available (that is, the network license(s) that you have are
not already in use). If there is a license available, the command
will run normally. If a license is not available the first time that
you attempt to use a RhinoMarine command in a Rhino session, you
will see the RhinoMarine Licensing dialog:

When you click Continue, or if this was not the
first time you have tried to run a RhinoMarine command in this Rhino
session, you will see the following Security Alert:

Click on OK, and wait for or ask another RhinoMarine
user to exit Rhino (which will release the RhinoMarine license).
Moving a Network License to
Another Computer
If the computer that is the RhinoMarine Network
License server is going to be unavailable (for example, it's a
laptop that is going to be taken out of the network), the Network
License can be moved to another computer that has RhinoMarine
installed on it. This transfer process can be done either from the
current Network License server, or the computer that is to become
the Network License server.
IMPORTANT: Once the transfer has been done, any
other computers in the network that use the RhinoMarine Network
License will have to Browse for the License in the new location.
From the Current Network License Server:
-
Be sure that there are not any other computers
currently using the Network License.
-
Be sure that the computer that will become the
Network License server is turned on and available on the
network.
-
On the Current Network License server, Start
Rhino, and select License from the RhinoMarine
menu.
-
On the RhinoMarine Licensing dialog, click on
the License menu, then select Move a License Between
Computers.
-
Select one of the transfer methods in the Move
RhinoMarine License dialog, and follow the steps as described.
-
On each computer that uses the RhinoMarine
Network License, you will need to Browse for the License in the
new location. This is the same process that was done when
the client computer was first set up to use the RhinoMarine
Network License
